How to test LinkedIn alternatives yourself, side by side
Other people's results tell you little about your own field, region and goals. A small, fair test does. The idea is to pick one goal, run LinkedIn and one alternative in parallel for the same few weeks, and write down what actually happens on each.
The sheet below is a plan you can copy into any spreadsheet. Shaded cells are where you fill in your own observations. Nothing is pre-filled with results, because results vary from person to person.
Personal data: do not upload other people's contact lists to any service without a lawful basis and, where needed, their consent. This page is not legal advice. If you are unsure, check guidance from your data protection authority.
Trial plan
Scroll sideways on small screens. Column headings stay in place as you scroll down.
| Test | What to do | What to record | On LinkedIn | On the alternative | Fair-test note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Set-up effort | Build a complete profile on the alternative using the same content as your LinkedIn profile. | Time taken, and anything you could not represent. | your notes | your notes | Use the same wording so differences come from the service, not the copy. |
| Finding people | Search for a short list of people or roles you care about. | How many you could find, and how current their details looked. | your notes | your notes | Use the same list on both. |
| Posting | Publish the same short post on both, at a similar time of day. | Replies and conversations that followed, not just likes. | your notes | your notes | Audiences differ in size, so judge relevance of replies more than volume. |
| Job alerts | Set the same job alert on both, if the alternative has jobs. | How many alerts were relevant to you. | your notes | your notes | Keep the search terms identical. |
| Messaging | Send a small number of polite, relevant messages on each. | Whether conversations started, and how they felt. | your notes | your notes | Respect each service's limits and the recipient's time. |
| Noise | Leave notifications on default for the trial. | Time spent on things that did not help your goal. | your notes | your notes | Turn notifications down afterwards if needed. |
| Exit check | Request a data export from each service. | What the export contained and whether it was usable. | your notes | your notes | An alternative you cannot leave is worth knowing about early. |
| Cost | Note any paid feature you used. | Amount paid and which feature it bought. | your notes | your notes | Use free tiers on both if you can, so cost does not skew the test. |
Alternatives you might test against
| Alternative | What it does | Where it stops | Good test goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluesky | Open short-form posting with custom feeds and portable accounts. | Professional activity is concentrated in some fields only, and there are no job tools. | Posting and replies |
| Mastodon | Short-form posting across independent servers, some focused on a profession. | Discovery across servers is harder, and there are no job tools. | Posting within a field |
| Substack | Newsletters with an exportable subscriber list. | Not built for quick networking or job search. | Building a readership |
| Indeed | Broad job listings and résumé search by employers. | Little networking or introduction support. | Job alerts |
| Wellfound | Startup job listings, often with pay ranges. | Narrow outside startups and technology. | Job alerts in tech |
| Meetup | In-person and online groups by topic and city. | Depends heavily on what is active where you live. | Meeting people |
| Slack or Discord communities | Topic communities with chat channels and sometimes job channels. | Conversations are hard to search later, and each community has its own rules. | Introductions and advice |
After the trial
Reading your log
- Compare outcomes against your goal, not general activity.
- Note what the alternative did that LinkedIn did not, and the reverse.
- Decide whether to keep both, switch, or stop the alternative. In 2026 many people keep more than one.
- If the result is unclear, it may depend on your field or region more than on the service. Extending the trial or choosing a different goal can help.
